A Harbor of Tradition and Modern Comfort
Origins and Legacy
Hotel Hafnia named after the Latin word Hafnia, meaning “harbor.” It was the first modern hotel in Tórshavn, designed to meet the needs of a growing number of visitors to the Faroe Islands.
Today, Hafnia remains a cultural touchstone, even appearing in Faroese. Its story is inseparable from the evolution of Tórshavn itself.

Location in the Old Town
Set on Áarvegur, the main street of Tórshavn, Hafnia enjoys a prime position in the capital’s Old Town. Tinganes, the Viking-era government quarter, lies just around the corner, while the harbor is only steps away.
From the hotel’s top floor, guests can take in panoramic views across the city. The National Gallery, and the pedestrian street Niels Finsens Gøta are all within walking distance. Despite its central location, Hafnia maintains a peaceful atmosphere, thanks to the quiet streets and proximity to the sea.
Rooms and Cottages
Hafnia offers 79 non-smoking rooms and 4 traditional cottages. Each room includes free Wi-Fi, coffee/tea facilities, a refrigerator, and satellite TV. Options range from Classic rooms with wide single beds to spacious Suites featuring jacuzzis, living areas, and commanding views.
Large double rooms and allergy-friendly accommodations are also available. Children under 12 stay free when sharing with parents. The cottages are particularly distinctive. With grass roofs and cozy interiors, they provide a heritage-rich alternative for families or long-stay guests. Inside, warm wood and stone accents create a traditional atmosphere, while modern conveniences ensure comfort.

Atmosphere
Interiors throughout the hotel reflect Nordic simplicity: muted greys, pale woods, and warm lighting create a welcoming atmosphere. Historical photographs and local artworks add a sense of place, while handcrafted ceramics and Faroese textile patterns provide subtle cultural touches.
Facilities and Services
Guests benefit from a wide range of amenities:
- Conference rooms for up to 100 people, equipped with modern AV and IT systems.
- A Finnish-style sauna and access to a nearby fitness center.
- Airport shuttle service stopping directly outside the hotel.
- Parking, room service, and facilities for disabled guests.
The hotel’s versatility makes it suitable for both leisure visitors and business travelers.

Cultural Significance
Hafnia is more than a hotel; it is part of Faroese identity. Its cottages, mist-covered in the mornings, embody tradition, while its modern interiors reflect the evolving character of Tórshavn. The hotel has long been a gathering place for locals and visitors, bridging past and present.

Seasonal Travel Notes
The best time to visit the Faroe Islands is late May through early September, when temperatures average 10–15°C and daylight can last nearly 24 hours. This period is ideal for hiking, boat tours, and wildlife spotting, including puffins and whales.
May and September offer fewer crowds and lower prices, though weather can be unpredictable. Winter, from October to April, brings storms and short daylight hours but appeals to those seeking dramatic landscapes and the Northern Lights.
Hotel Hafnia stands as both a modern retreat and a cultural landmark. Its location in the Old Town, its blend of rooms and cottages, and its thoughtful design make it a gateway to the Faroes.
Whether for a short city break or a longer stay, Hafnia offers a balance of history, comfort, and connection to the maritime spirit of Tórshavn.
